Is there a quiz today?", etc. These are the ones who are usually well-advised to drop with a W because they are almost always well over their heads. About drowning your sorrows in libations, I agree; don't forget that sorrows can swim. I advise avoiding the bookstore like the Black Plague; it is always a rip-off. Amazon and Bookfinder.com have become trusted sources. Making connections with other students in your major is also great advice.
