Are you Digitally Dirt Free?

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

something for all of us on sharenotes.com to consider is the possibility of the digital paper trail we might be leaving as we move past graduation and eye our future careers. In the past if someone snapped a questionable pic or heard perhaps a incendiary comment, these actions reached a handful of people at most. And most of the time, those people were almost never your employers (or future employers).

But in today’s world, a great deal of our lives, our politics, our views, our parties are all on the internet for anyone to see. Generally this makes little impact on our daily lives, particularly when we are in college. It seems that everyone has some dirt on them floating around, and who cares really? Well I’ll tell you who, you’re future employer cares. Reference checks are old school and don’t mean a whole lot, however google checks are very much the norm now a days. What comes up when you get google’d can sometimes make or break you.

According to a new study by careerbuilder.com one of the ten strongest reasons for being hired these days is a strong web presence. And by strong I don’t mean how many times you’ve been tagged on Facebook doing a keg stand. Strong web presence is right up there with “great resume” and “creative problem solving” so it’s weighted quite heavily for some employers.

In the past prospective employers were forced to judge us based solely on the neatly packaged vision of us we choose to show them. Our resume, our interview and some hand picked references where really all they had to go by. We had a great deal of control over that, however now social media has given employers a window into our personal lives and all that entails. Because of the ease of access employers don’t even need to reference why or what they might find questionable about you, they simply pass and move along to the next application.

So while it may seem the norm while in college to lay it all out there, being dirt free is something to consider once you’ve hit the final strides of college life. The problem is social networking is.. well social, you may not have direct control over all the media that is out there and associated with you. Sure you could take off the pics on your personal accounts, but what about all your friends? And there is a matter of the cache of google search results, it can take time before page rankings change and you’re questionable material falls off the search results, so plan ahead.

Careerbuilder.com goes on to say that being online does not have to be a bad thing. If you make strong connections with people within the industry and perhaps within the companies you mean to apply with, these kinds of positive “references” can also help you. No one can tell you what you should or should not post up. And quite frankly no one can say what, if anything a would be employer might find questionable, so that much you will have to judge for yourself.
What I can tell you is that employers are looking and making decisions on what they see. And those decisions could effect the careers of many of us here on sharenotes.com, hopefully all for the best. I can hear the clicking already .. “delete” “delete” “delete”…

New Bladeless Fan By Dyson

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

You tech and engineering students on sharenotes.com will really appreciate this post, it should be right up your alley. To build the better mouse trap has long been the motto of anyone seeking to improve technology ever since the act of invention began. And the proverbial “mousetrap” is everywhere. We concentrate on the most obvious thing like the ipod, the newest in a long line of portable music devices starting back with the “walkman”. However items in need of an upgrade are literally everywhere.

Take James Dyson’s newest invention for instance, the blade-less fan. The Air Multiplier as he calls it. It’s one of those “oh yeah!” kind of things where you don’t really feel that the fan MUST be improved, but when it comes along, it’s a welcome surprise. After his successful re-thinking of the standard vacuum cleaner, aptly named “Dyson”, he has moved on to how we cool ourselves.

I’m going to link you to a youtube video showing the device here so you can see it, however if you can imagine a very large ring (approx 16″ diamater) sitting on a pedestal base, that’s what it looks like. It’s very spartan and dare I say pretty? The Mac of fans if you will.

How it works (and I am grossly over simplifying things here) is by using an impeller in the base (think of a jet engine’s fan) that pulls air in, that sucks in the air and spits it out in a small opening along the back edge of the ring. The key according to Dyson is the shape of the surface of the ring that the air passes over. It works much like a wing of a plane, by curving and causing the air to move faster along it’s surface than it would be propelled simply by the machine. This not only accelerates the air, but it also creates an area of low pressure that forces the air coming through to want to fill that space causing the airflow to further accelerate.

What you are left with is a smooth and even flow of air (unlike traditional fans that chop the air with it’s blades) that can be finely tuned with the flow control knob. Set it to Oscillate and relax. The benefits of his design are many, the smooth controlled air aside, it’s beautiful, easy to clean, easy to store and completely safe especially around children with no accessible moving parts, much less chopping blades. The drawback as you might expect is the cost. It’s going to cost about $300… for a fan (check it out here. Sadly it will most likely be cost prohibitive initially for a great many of us (me included!).

While all this is very interesting, I decided to blog about it because the sharenotes.com users are studying a myriad of fields, and some of you are aspiring Engineers. The fact of the matter is, we’re always in need of some ingenuity and advancement. Whatever your specialty or field of study remember to keep an open mind and allow your creativity to flourish the better mouse trap is always going to be out there, somewhere.

Udorse is looking for you…

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

In a society of the showcasing of “me”, the creators of the new (Beta testing) website Udorse, are hoping to tap into our cultural vanity. Or should I say, continue to tap into our vanity? You really need to look no further than the fact that we have Facebook updates in the 3rd person… “Bob is eating celery” and Twitter updates “I just bought socks!” to know we are all desperately seeking attention. I’m not the only one on sharenotes.com who’s doing it. We are in college, therefore we are all doing it.

The creators of Udorse know this and are banking on this fact. What is a Udorse? Well its a web start up that allows you or “U” to endorse .. get it? “Udorse”.. anyway it allows you to endorse products and or locations that are in the very pics you probably already have all over your facebook account. So lets say you’ve got a great pic of you sporting your favorite Kanye West glasses, you know the ones that look like mini blinds? And you just love those glasses. What Udorse allows you to do is tag the pic and link to where you got them.

Ultimately, Udorse hopes to partner up with the retailers themselves and offer the users a cut of some dough if someone where to click on your favorite glasses to get themselves a pair. Think about it, you get to show the world how cool you are AND possibly make money? I can hear the multiple thuds of teenage girls hitting the floor as they pass out over the concept. “OMG! That can totally be my job!”.

Easy! Before you get too excited, there are only a handful of partners so far and remember it’s all Beta right now. You’ll have to wait until the end of the year to start your exciting career as a professional Udorse…er? I guess Udorser is right. I wonder if I just coined a term? Firsties!

Anyway my personal take is that if you give people a forum to display how ultra hip they are sporting their wears, plus dangle the carrot of income, you will have a winner. Period. The income aspect might be meager at best (we’re talking 5 bucks a month meager), but it won’t matter. My feel is that the primary target user is probably in his or her teens, but I think a close second place is all of us. Yes I mean you! Go back and look through your facebook galleries and tweets, don’t tell me you’re not showing off your gear and travels in pretty much all of them.

Now don’t think I am looking down my nose at the users of sharenotes.com because this is a case of “it takes one to know one”. I am just as, if not more guilty than you are. What do you think? Plan on becoming a Udorser or do you think it’s just ridiculous? Join the discussion by leaving your comments below.

Anyone at UND?

Monday, October 5th, 2009

Any here on sharenotes.com at the University of North Dakota? I understand that your school just received an anonymous donation of 10 Million Dollars. Yes I said dollars, not pesos. And yeah I said it was anonymous. That is a lot of cash to kick down to you school and to do it anonymously to boot? Well that’s the part that’s pretty crazy.

You would assume that anyone looking to be that generous would also be looking for some kind of recognition. I don’t think it’s outlandish for a person who donates that significant an amount of money to any organization to want even a little recognition. I would probably insist that the school name the Library after me as well as perhaps a sports field or gymnasium.

I always thought things like this only happened in movie, but I guess not. It’s sad though in this day and economy, 10 Million dollars isn’t even that great of an amount. Its certainly generous, no doubt about it. Hopefully the school will find creative ways to stretch the money to it’s fullest potential.

If anyone here on the sharenotes.com community does happen to go to this school, I’d be interested to hear about what the school intends to do with such a generous gift. Feel free to leave your comments below.

the Smoking Ban’s Effect on Heart Attacks

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

You may have read a previous blog post here on sharenotes.com that I posted about a proposed smoking ban in the military. I was slightly torn on the subject simply because I feel the military’s stress levels are super high right now. I am very anti-smoking but maybe a vice, even a terrible one like smoking, was keeping them going. However what I am not conflicted about is a ban on smoking in public places. I am of the personal feeling that if a person wants to smoke that is their prerogative, however I should not be forced to be exposed to it.

According to a recent study the ban on smoking that has occurred over three years may have had a dramatic effect on our health. According to the study, the smoke free environment has led to a 1/3 less heart attacks since the ban in parts of the US, Europe and Canada was first put into place. This strongly supports the stance that 2nd hand smoke can be harmful to those of us who do not smoke. It also strongly supports an expansion of the ban to places that are still havens for smokers.

According to the CDC an estimated 46,000 people die each year from 2nd hand smoke related heart disease. 46,000…that’s over 13 times the deaths from 9/11, every year, and just as needless. While we can’t make up for the senselessness of 9/11, we can do something about the future needless deaths related to smoking. With a world wide ban of smoking could all but erase a great deal of those deaths.

If it sounds like I am on a soapbox today, I’ll admit, I am. But I’m not completely heartless, I do feel for smokers. I know it’s horribly addictive, I’ve seen it first hand, and know how difficult it is to cut the habit. I had to watch my father go through it and it wasn’t until he was threatened with lung cancer before he was able to walk away. Most college kids smoke at some point or another recreationally, house parties, finals etc… But for many of us, that occasional indulgence turns into a habit.

My only advice for my fellow students is walk away sooner than later because it only gets harder. As I said at the beginning of the blog post if someone wants to smoke, they can, but just hopefully not around me. I fully support a public ban on smoking everywhere… even Vegas! Gasp! Time for sharenotes.comto weigh in, this topic always gets you talking. Support a ban? Wanna smoke anywhere, anytime? Here’s your chance to voice your opinion. Leave you comments below.
