UW and The Dream Act

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

Recently the President of the University of Washington or U-Dub as it’s called by the locals, has publicly shown his support for the “Dream Act” which is being mulled over by members of congress. For those of you on sharenotes.com that don’t know, the Dream Act is a bill that would allow high school students who are in the country illegally a path to citizenship by attending college.

The bill would not allow the students to be eligible for federal aid, however it would allow the students to take out loans to pay for schooling. The school’s president Emmert says the DREAM Act would ensure “talented individuals stay in the United States legally,” which in turn would help the country’s economy.

Critics of the bill state that in a environment where immigration is largely uncontrolled, the bill encourages an activity that is after all, illegal. While I’m not totally convinced one way or another, it is a strange message to send. So say, this act is definitively illegal, however should you make it into the country, it’s cool if you go to our schools.

Supporters of the bill concede that immigrants, illegal or otherwise are here to stay. And they have always been a part of our society, if we can encourage them to become more vital members through eduction then that is a good thing.

Because the debate over immigration has always been hotly contested the bill has been stalled. Advocates are hopeful that this bill will be part of a larger immigration makeover that the Obama administration has been discussing. Of course given the state of our two wars, the economy and the health care debate it’s likely that any comprehensive revamp will be back burnered by law makers. At least for the time being.

Good News for Scrabble Players

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Those of you avid gamers our there may appreciate this… avid board gamers that is. The Oxford Dictionary has decided that social media and it’s lexicon is more than a passing fad. Good news for scrabble players as you now have one more word in your arsenal. I think everyone on sharenotes.com is familiar with the term “unfriend”, we’ve all done it or perhaps had it done to us. If you’ve been living in suspended animation for the past few years I’ll enlighten you. Unfriending is simply the action by which you remove a so called “friend” from your friends list on any given social media site. The site du jour right now is of course, Facebook, but it’s applicable to any social media site.

The New Oxford American dictionary has deemed this term it’s “word of the year” beating out such contenders as the salacious “sexting” and the less exciting but none less used “netbook” for top honors. The term, a verb (exe: she made me mad so I unfriended her!) is probably one of the most used terms on college campuses, so some congratulations should go to us for bringing the term into the mainstream.

Most likely due to the rampant popularity of social sites these days, unfriend should have some major legs. While it’s not nearly as exciting as sexting it should be around to stay. In past years the focus on the word of the year was more oriented on a greener Earth, with terms like Hypermilers (people who squeeze obscene mileage out of their vehicles with modifications and driving techniques) and carbon-neutral (offsetting your carbon footprint). What the word will be next year is really anyone’s guess at this point. There’s a good bet though that the life styles of those of us on sharenotes.com will absolutely have some impact on where it may come from.

Anyone at UND?

Monday, October 5th, 2009

Any here on sharenotes.com at the University of North Dakota? I understand that your school just received an anonymous donation of 10 Million Dollars. Yes I said dollars, not pesos. And yeah I said it was anonymous. That is a lot of cash to kick down to you school and to do it anonymously to boot? Well that’s the part that’s pretty crazy.

You would assume that anyone looking to be that generous would also be looking for some kind of recognition. I don’t think it’s outlandish for a person who donates that significant an amount of money to any organization to want even a little recognition. I would probably insist that the school name the Library after me as well as perhaps a sports field or gymnasium.

I always thought things like this only happened in movie, but I guess not. It’s sad though in this day and economy, 10 Million dollars isn’t even that great of an amount. Its certainly generous, no doubt about it. Hopefully the school will find creative ways to stretch the money to it’s fullest potential.

If anyone here on the sharenotes.com community does happen to go to this school, I’d be interested to hear about what the school intends to do with such a generous gift. Feel free to leave your comments below.

the Smoking Ban’s Effect on Heart Attacks

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

You may have read a previous blog post here on sharenotes.com that I posted about a proposed smoking ban in the military. I was slightly torn on the subject simply because I feel the military’s stress levels are super high right now. I am very anti-smoking but maybe a vice, even a terrible one like smoking, was keeping them going. However what I am not conflicted about is a ban on smoking in public places. I am of the personal feeling that if a person wants to smoke that is their prerogative, however I should not be forced to be exposed to it.

According to a recent study the ban on smoking that has occurred over three years may have had a dramatic effect on our health. According to the study, the smoke free environment has led to a 1/3 less heart attacks since the ban in parts of the US, Europe and Canada was first put into place. This strongly supports the stance that 2nd hand smoke can be harmful to those of us who do not smoke. It also strongly supports an expansion of the ban to places that are still havens for smokers.

According to the CDC an estimated 46,000 people die each year from 2nd hand smoke related heart disease. 46,000…that’s over 13 times the deaths from 9/11, every year, and just as needless. While we can’t make up for the senselessness of 9/11, we can do something about the future needless deaths related to smoking. With a world wide ban of smoking could all but erase a great deal of those deaths.

If it sounds like I am on a soapbox today, I’ll admit, I am. But I’m not completely heartless, I do feel for smokers. I know it’s horribly addictive, I’ve seen it first hand, and know how difficult it is to cut the habit. I had to watch my father go through it and it wasn’t until he was threatened with lung cancer before he was able to walk away. Most college kids smoke at some point or another recreationally, house parties, finals etc… But for many of us, that occasional indulgence turns into a habit.

My only advice for my fellow students is walk away sooner than later because it only gets harder. As I said at the beginning of the blog post if someone wants to smoke, they can, but just hopefully not around me. I fully support a public ban on smoking everywhere… even Vegas! Gasp! Time for sharenotes.comto weigh in, this topic always gets you talking. Support a ban? Wanna smoke anywhere, anytime? Here’s your chance to voice your opinion. Leave you comments below.

Fraud Bulletin: Please Read.

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

I’m hoping that all the users of sharenotes.com read this bulletin because although most of you are not involved in defrauding the site, unfortunately it will eventually effect us all

Its recently come to the attention of the site’s administrators that some people have been fraudulently acquiring points. The specific manner that this is occurring is not the point of this post but rather, the fact that it is happening at all.

This site was initially set up to be a benefit to every student who participates, both in the sense that it allows us (myself included) a means to bolster our own study materials as well as a forum share our own. The benefits of having access to our contemporaries lecture notes has been covered ad nauseum on this blog. Suffice it to say from the feedback we receive daily, this site is an important utility to a great many students out there.

As a means of saying thanks for your participation sharenotes.com has added incentives with it’s points structure, which includes the Ipod giveaways that many of you have enjoyed. Sadly these kinds of special perks may have to go away shortly if the fraud is not mitigated.

The bad news doesn’t stop there the negative effects of fraudulent accounts can and will effect this site to the point where it may no longer exist. If you’re on here and you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you don’t want that to happen any more than I do.

So put plainly, fraud is happening, we know about it and were working on it. Some things might change around here and that is unfortunate. If you don’t want this site to go away and perhaps you have any information regarding the fraud itself, you can contact and give us a heads up. We’ll keep any info we get anonymous. sharenotes.com has been very generous with our giveaways and we would certainly thank anyone who is willing to share info with us.
